Have you ever noticed how many people commute to work alone? Next time you get stuck in traffic look around and see how many drivers are the only person in the car.
Imagine if all those lone drivers carpooled, how much less traffic would there be? Not only does carpooling reduce traffic congestion, it saves money, reduces stress and it also reduces carbon emissions.
You can start your own carpool! In order to get started you need to chat to other people who might share your plans to commute together, either from your neighbourhood or from your workplace. Social media is a great place reach old friends and work colleagues who may live in your area.
Here are some tips to ensure a safe and successful carpool experience:
Determine your route
Establish meeting points and times of departure and return. Make sure that you agree upon drop-off locations for your fellow carpoolers.
Draw up a driving schedule
If there are multiple capable drivers in the carpool then you should create a schedule so there is no confusion regarding whose turn it is to drive. Rotating driving responsibility, be it daily or weekly, will give you a break from having to drive all of the time.
Create a carpool contact information sheet
Be sure to share contact information in case someone can’t fulfill their driving duty or is taking a day off sick. All carpool members should be contacted if there is an unexpected change in schedule. Creating an instant messenger group (Whatsapp, iMessage etc.) is a great way to stay in touch with the whole group.
Everyone should discuss their personal preferences with regards to smoking, music, food and drinks. Some people don’t mind food and drinks in their cars and some prefer to be quiet in the mornings, have respect for their wishes. (Also, if you don’t mind drinks in your vehicle, getting coffee for your passengers in the morning is likely to make you the favourite driver!)
