The EcoMobility World Festival 2015 will take place in Sandton this October. The EcoMobility Festival is an initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Sandton and surrounding areas by encouraging commuters to use public transport, bicycle lanes and walkways.
Certain roads in Sandton will be closed off to encourage people to get out of their cars. But, this doesn't mean that you won't be able to use your vehicles in the business district if you need to or in the case of an emergency.
As Johannesburg grows in population and size it is estimated that in the future the city won't be able to cope with the increasing number of cars due to the rapid rate of development in the area.
Construction is underway in Sandton to provide alternative modes of transport, such as walkways and cycle lanes, for people in the area. The City of Joburg has also established several park-and-ride locations across the city to promote the use of public transport. Some of these developments will remain after the conclusion of the campaign.
The City will has also implemented a public transport loop, running on Rivonia Road, Fredman Drive and Fifth Street. The loop will see one lane dedicated to public transport which will stop along the route throughout the day. There will also be increased sidewalk space for pedestrians.
The City is hoping to learn from people's experiences about how to improve transport in the already congested CBD.
