Ford is the first automaker to open a one-stop 3D digital shop – the Ford 3D Store. Ford fans with access to a 3D printer can download digital files and produce models of their own or order pre-printed models that are 1/32nd the size of the original vehicle.
Mark Bentley, Ford's global licensing manager, explained: "3D printing at home is a growing trend. It makes sense for us to offer 3D Ford models. We’re using 3D printing every day to rapidly prototype parts - now we want to share that fun with our fans."
Juniper research estimates that sales of desktop 3D printers will exceed one million by 2018.
You can buy 3D digital files from a growing library of more than 1000 Ford images. Available 3D models include the new Ford GT, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350R, Focus ST and Fiesta ST, with additional Ford vehicles being released at a later date. The site was developed with the help of Turbosquid, a leader in marketing 3D image files.
Buyers must register with the site and agree that the item will not be used commercially.
